DOPAMINE IS RENEWING ITS IMAGE

DOPAMINE IS RENEWING ITS IMAGE 150 150 Dopamine

The pandemic has become a stage that, far from stopping the Mexican studio, it has strengthened and renewed it. In the United Kingdom, Dopamine just finished its first co-production. In Mexico, Dopamine has also wrapped up two series, and another two series are in pre-production. The studio has launched a new entertainment business unit, and this week, its new image has been released.

“We have reached our inflection point. Our symbol is a spark, a glimmer of the daily dopamine that motivates and moves us since our beginnings three years and a half ago. We’ve had some complicated months, but also, they have been a great professional and life lesson that forced us to evolve. This is the reason why we wanted to give our logo and image a new scope, that matches the incorporation of Pablo Silva to our Content team as our Creative Director as well. A figure that will add to the visuals of our productions, to their identity, coherence and originality”, explains Fidela Navarro, Dopamine’s CEO.

“Times are changing and we decided to leave the curves behind in order to create our own vision with a direct focus and straight lines. The typography of our logo has left any possible bends behind, and we have stretched our “E” as a way to express our expansion, our growth, our unstoppable rhythm and the future of our studio. The colors and the icon of our brand remain the same, since our foundations remain the same as well”, specifies Pablo Silva, the new Creative Director of Dopamine.

The production studio releases the new logo today, and they will be sharing the process and meaning of their new identity in social media along this next week.

*Pablo Silva has a solid background as an editor and director for Mediaset (Todo va bien, Lo sabe, no lo sabe, Hermano Mayor), the advertisement industry (Adidas/Real Madrid, Samsung, Microsoft), and music (Iván Ferreiro, Rozalén, Alba Messa, Fredi Leis). Pablo has led graphic and marketing campaigns (La Competencia, Señor Mono, Dopamine), and has an extensive knowledge about scriptwriting (a Master’s degree course in Scriptwriting from the Universidad Pontificia of Salamanca, in 2009), and filmmaking.

NENT Studios UK announces ‘Close to Me’ as its first original series

NENT Studios UK announces ‘Close to Me’ as its first original series 150 150 Dopamine

NENT Studios UK announces ‘Close to Me’ as its first original series

  • 6 x 60 English-language drama for Viaplay and Channel 4, based on Amanda Reynolds’ hit novel, ‘Close to Me’
  • Connie Nielsen and Christopher Eccleston to star; Michael Samuels to direct
  • Initial production from NENT Studios UK’s first-look deal with The Development Partnership, as well as new relationship with Dopamine

NENT Studios UK, part of Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT Group), announces that its first original production will be the English-language psychological drama series ‘Close to Me’, based on the best-selling novel of the same name by British author Amanda Reynolds. Award-winning Danish actress Connie Nielsen (‘Wonder Woman’) will play the lead role in the six-part series, which will be a Viaplay Original premiering exclusively on NENT Group’s Viaplay streaming service across the Nordic region and as an acquisition for Channel 4 in the UK. Dopamine’s recently announced partnership with NENT Studios UK will see it act as a co-production partner for the series, while NENT Studios UK will distribute the title internationally.

‘Close to Me’ is the story of Jo Harding (Connie Nielsen), a woman who seems to have it all – a beautiful house in the country, a loving family and a devoted husband (Christopher Eccleston: ‘The A Word’, ‘Doctor Who’). But following a fall, an entire year suddenly vanishes from Jo’s memory. As she struggles to piece events together, Jo discovers that her life wasn’t quite as perfect as she imagined – and that someone will do all they can to keep a terrible secret from her.

The freshly greenlit series was originally developed by The Development Partnership and Great Point Media and is part of TDP’s first look deal with NENT Studios UK. This is the first series from the venture, which was initiated to create high-profile drama projects for the international market. Angela Pell (‘Snow Cake’, ‘Gifted’) has written the screenplay. TDP is the sister company of agency The Artists Partnership, which represents both the underlying rights for ‘Close to Me’ by Amanda Reynolds in addition to star Connie Nielsen. Michael Samuels (‘The Windermere Children’, ‘The Missing’, ‘Any Human Heart’) is on board to direct ‘Close to Me’, while Gina Carter (‘Yardie, ‘In the Long Run’, ‘Kingdom’) will be the executive producer, alongside Robert Taylor and Ed Clarke of TDP and Dave Clarke from NENT Studios UK.

In addition to her leading role in ‘Close to Me’, Connie Nielsen will also be an executive producer of the series. Her acting credits include major films such as ‘Gladiator’, ‘Mission to Mars’, ‘The Hunted’ and ‘Nymphomaniac’. She appears as the DC Comics’ superhero Hippolyta in the films ‘Wonder Woman’, ‘Justice League’ and the forthcoming ‘Wonder Woman 1984’. Nielsen starred as Meredith Kane in the Starz series ‘Boss’ and had a leading role in the second season of ‘The Following’.

Richard Halliwell, CEO of NENT Studios UK, says: “We are delighted to work with The Development Partnership on such a strong and impactful first project: ‘Close to Me’ is an impressive title to spearhead NENT Studios UK’s slate of original content and will undoubtedly prove an excellent calling card for the new business. We are currently developing a high-volume, wide-ranging slate of scripted projects, primarily for Viaplay, and anticipate announcing further greenlights over the coming months. I believe our new business to be a very attractive proposition, especially for British drama producers and writers, and encourage those with great ideas to get in touch.”

Robert Taylor, managing director of The Development Partnership, adds: “‘Close to Me’ is the perfect first project for TDP and NENT Studios UK. We saw the huge potential for development in Amanda Reynolds’ novel as soon as we read it and Angela Pell has taken that foundation and written fantastic scripts which bring this world and these characters to life. We are delighted to be working with both Channel 4 and Viaplay, and with the incredibly strong team we have assembled in front of and behind the camera.”

Filippa Wallestam, NENT Group chief content officer, comments: “This inventive, unsettling and fascinating drama uncovers the deception that can lie below the surface of a seemingly perfect family life. The constantly twisting plot, straight to camera dialogue and great indie soundtrack will draw in viewers, while also exploring a subject rarely highlighted on screen – the female mid-life crisis. Connie Nielsen and Christopher Eccleston are hugely charismatic talents and this series asks a question that everyone can relate to – what do we really know about ourselves and those closest to us?”

Nick Lee, head of series acquisitions, Channel 4 says: “‘Close to Me’ plots an intimate tale of mid-life crisis and distrust in those you love. We are drawn to the arresting story of fear within domesticity and that will be sure to keep our viewers gripped. Nielson and Ecclestone are finely cast for the lead couple and Channel 4 is thrilled to bring this show to the UK as an acquired co-production with TDP and NENT Studios UK.”

Fidela Navarro, CEO of Dopamine concludes: “We are thrilled that our new partnership with NENT Studios UK has given us the opportunity to co-produce ‘Close to Me’ and work alongside the talented teams at TDP and NENT Studios UK. We are especially excited as ‘Close to Me’ will be the first-ever English-language scripted co-production for a Latin American business, which clearly endorses Dopamine’s strategy of creating content that works on a global level.”

‘Close to Me’ will go into production in the UK later this month.

And one of the series’ star roles, La Malinche, is in the promising hands of Ishbel Bautista, a young emerging actress who passed an exhaustive casting process carried out throughout Mexico. The main cast includes Cristian Gamero (Jerónimo de Aguilar) and special appearances by Aura Garrido and Silverio Palacios.

The shooting, which took place in natural locations in various parts of Mexico and a studio in the country’s capital, has required the construction of many of the sets where the plot takes place. A considerable effort was made by the special effects company El Ranchito (Game of Thrones) so that the viewer could visualize the most faithful portrayal possible of Tenochtitlan and other places that have disappeared so long ago.

In this quest to recreate a place and a time lost, the series was shot in Spanish as well as in Mayan and Nahuatl, languages in which the cast learned., Additionally, the cast studied  horsemanship and period weapon handling, among other skills.

The objective is to recreate a lost world, that of the spectacular Tenochtitlan, staying true to its rigor and splendor. To achieve this, a 300-person technical, artistic and historical team has been working together for months. Since the production of the series, which coincides with the 500th anniversary of Hernán Cortés’s momentous arrival in what is now Mexico, no effort has been spared to ensure that the result lives up to the occasion.
